There you are loading up your family for the annual summer vacation to the cabin. How much time have you spent preparing? Well, everything at work is taken care of for your absence. The house is completely shut down and locked up; with neighbors ready to implement the precautionary measures, in case plans B or C need to be enacted. All necessary good have been pack and double-checked. The gas tank is full, the oil has been changed and the insurance card is stowed safely for easy location. What did you do about the tires? Well, something, for sure. I'll bet that you looked at them; at least to check the air pressure, but probably at best to consider the wear they're showing for a possible...

-> Interaction with the underwater world is something all divers do, as soon as we enter the water we are "interactive mode", the water and the diver join in a temporal unity. This unity is a strange one for sure, first of all we really shouldn't be a part of this world, and through the use of SCUBA we are allowed this interaction. This allowance however has responsibilities. We are guests and we are offered a unique insight into life on this planet, not everyone can do this - although with increasing Global warming and CO2 levels it may soon be a necessity. As guests we have to understand our impact upon marine life. Coral grows about 1cm in 100 years, one careless fin-kick and bang goes 1000 years...

Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean just north of the Tropic Of Capricorn and about 500 miles (800 kms) to the east of Madagascar. Volcanic in origin, its landscape is both awesome and beautiful at the same time. The surrounding waters are also awe-inspiring and contain a wealth of different species of coral, which makes diving in Mauritius a memorable underwater experience. Mauritius is dominated by three peaks, of which the tallest, Piton de la Riviere Noire reaches over 828 metres. Ownership of Mauritius has changed hands over the centuries. It was first discovered by the Portuguese at the beginning of the 16th century, and was then handed over to the Dutch who in turn handed it to the French...

Going into the sea and exploring what is beneath has interested people for many years to discover artifacts, repair ships and to look at marine life. The early divers faced the challenges of having to hold their breath while diving into the water which ultimately pushed people to invent and improve on diving equipment to stay underwater for longer and at increasing depths. Divers realized that a device would be needed to breathe through that would also deal with water pressure. Hollow reeds were used at first but were found to be inefficient because divers could not dive deep. In the 16th century, people used diving bells that used air from the surface to supply with air underwater. The diving bell...

Most scuba divers won't jump ship without an alternate air source or octopus regulator saddled to their scuba gear. Regarded as a safety gadget, the scuba equipment is rarely used in the course of the dive except in times of Air trouble. Thus, it is often looked upon as a necessary burden with its assembly and hose fittings contributing to underwater drag. Nonetheless, scuba divers would tolerate a few, additional pounds on their back just to increase their safety margin on those dives. Despite its function as a reserve air source, selecting an octopus regulator can be quite tricky especially for novice scuba divers. The adjustment function has often been the cause of confusion among octo buyers...

Scuba Diving - Should I Tip The Crew?

Tipping etiquette is one of those subjects that often causes concern and even embarrassment. Many of us often find ourselves thinking, should I tip? How much is a reasonable amount to tip? Or even who should I tip? This is further complicated abroad when we're perhaps not as familiar with local customs and expectations. Whilst I feel strongly that none should feel under pressure to tip, particularly if you're not a satisfied customer, I do feel that it is good to tip, after all in addition to ensuring you enjoy the dive, your scuba instructors & dive masters are responsible for your safety throughout the dive, so it's good to show appreciation for this. The boat crew also have an important role...

The scuba regulator is employed in an open-circuit scuba set. Said scuba equipment reduces high air pressure conveyed by the diving cylinder to the first stage and feeds breathable gas to the diver through the second stage's mouthpiece. Also called pressure regulator or demand regulator, the scuba equipment is one of the essentials to diving that determines breathing quality and inhalation effort during the dive. But given the different types of regulators and the pertinent design of its first and second stage components, how should a neophyte diver - or even a seasoned diver at that, choose a scuba regulator that incorporates user adjustment and delivers a venturi-assisted air flow in its features...

Choosing a Scuba BCD

A scuba BCD, or buoyancy compensatory device (sometimes known as the buoyancy control device), is part of the basic diving kit. It allows the diver to control his buoyancy and is counteracted by his weights. There are various different styles of scuba BCD to meet the dimensional requirements of their owners. Jacket style BCDs are the most common and buckle up at the front. Vest style BCDs have inflatable panels at the sides and wrap around the front. Both styles feature tanks straps at the back, and extra pockets and straps to house the remainder of your diving gear, for example, the octopus, regulator and integrated weight system. Wing style BCDs, instead of having side panels, have balloons which...

More specifically "skin-diving" a 'highly competitive sport' is "free diving" using no equipment to breath. The divers use a single breath of air to descend to depths of over 100m competing with other diver to reach the greatest possible depth. With extensive training and yoga a professional skin divers body reacts like that of 'whales and dolphins' during a skin dive. The heart rate slows down and the oxygen from that one lung full of air is concentrated in the heart and in the brain.
